A conceptual, hands-on opening module. Through discussion, observation and simple model-building, students discover what a robot really is — no Arduino code yet.

About this course

Students explore the sense–think–act cycle that defines every robot, survey the main types of robots and where they are used, break a robot down into its core components, and meet the engineering design process and lab-safety habits they will use all year.

1. What is Robotics? (Introduction & History) — Understand what robots are and trace a short history of robotics.
2. Types of Robots — Compare industrial, mobile, humanoid and educational robots.
3. Components of a Robot — Break a robot into sensors, controller, actuators and power.
4. Engineering Design Process & Robotics Safety — Apply the design process and lab-safety rules to a build.
